Lockheed Martin says it has solved its problems with the vertical lift engine for its Joint Strike Fighter. Problems in the gearbox were traced to a 0.25-inch misalignment of two gears. The overheated bearing was found to be the result of running the engine at full power without a previous low-power break-in period. The company is scrambling to get enough test data to allow Pratt & Whitney to complete the critical engine-controlling software.--Stephen V Cole
