Hamas is building an "infantry rocket" inside the Gaza Strip, much to the embarrassment of the Palestinian Authority and the outrage of Israel. Designated Kassam-1, the rocket is 60mm (2.4 inches) in diameter and 79cm (31 inches) long; it carries a 4.5 kilogram (9.9 pound) explosive charge the respectable distance of 4 (or 5) kilometers. The weapon is unguided and, when fired at medium to long range, could only be regarded as an area-bombardment weapon. In a recent incident, Hamas fired three of these into an Israeli village without causing any significant damage.--Stephen V Cole
