In Afghanistan the U.S. Army found that it needs to find new technologies to detect and clear mines. Army engineers are trained and equipped to cut a lane through a minefield, not clear the entire minefield. In places like Afghanistan, clearing entire mined areas was more common than just clearing lanes. --Stephen V Cole
