The U.S. Army 865th Combat Support Hospital, a reserve unit from upstate New York, has set up shop in a floor of the Kuwait Armed Forces Hospital. The 126 medical staff have 60 beds and operating facilities at their disposal and provide medical services for American troops stationed in, or training in, Kuwait. While other field hospitals (which tend to have 300 beds each) would come in to support operations in Iraq, the 865th is learning how to cope with the unique climate and disease conditions in that part of the world. Medical staff from the 865th brief other U.S. military doctors and nurses on what they have found and are, in effect, an advance team for all other foreign medical personnel that might soon be operating in Kuwait.
