A new alliance of politicians, former military officers, and other anti-nuclear activists announced a campaign on 9 Dec to convince President Clinton to remove all nuclear weapons from alert status on New Year's Eve, just in case something unpredictable happens with the Y2K bug. The group, named "Back From the Brink", complains that while the US and Russia both promised to "de-target" their missiles, these can be re-targeted in less than two minutes.--Stephen V Cole
