The Congressional Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military award, is gold-plated brass and costs about $30. The Congressional Gold Medal (the equivalent civilian award) is solid gold and costs $30,000 (including the cost of individually designing it). Legislation has been proposed to make Medals of Honor out of solid gold.--Stephen V Cole
