Procurement: Super UAV Turrets

Archives

June 22, 2009: The U.S. Air Force is buying 60 surveillance and targeting turrets for their MQ-1 Predator and MQ-9 Reaper UAVs. These turrets contain day/night cameras, laser range finders and illuminators (for laser guided bombs and missiles) and other sensors and surveillance electronics. Most of the turrets are the AN/AAS-52, which has been around for a while, but 25 are the more advanced AN/DAS-1 (for the MQ-9). These turrets cost between one and two million dollars each, depending on options installed.
