On April 19th, India launched a 3,900 pound satellite into orbit using it's own Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-D1) launcher. The GSLV-D1 uses a lot of Russian technology, but this is the first time India has put a satellite into high (geosynchronous) orbit. It cost India $305 million, over ten years, to develop the GSLV-D1. If India can develop a record of reliability, it can enter the satellite launch market (which, at the moment, is depressed, but that will change in the next decade.)
