UN officials assert that the increase in Central Asian drug production is tied to the increase in the number of armed Islamic militants. The drug money is supplying the militants with weapons and other support. In a common pattern world wide, rebel movements and drug dealers make common cause for their mutual benefit, despite frequent proclamations by fundamentalists that they are against drugs. Technically, they are, but in practical terms, they never manage to suppress the drug trade.
