 The first battalion of the new Afghan army will be stationed in Kabul to protect government offices, and provide a fire brigade to emergencies elsewhere in the country. French instructors are training a second battalion and US instructors a third. The first nine battalions will be organized into an infantry division stationed in Kabul. 

In northern Afghanistan, officials are trying to ban carrying weapons in market places. This is to try and avoid more gun battles because of disputes with merchants (either over prices, or from extortion attempts.) The government is also trying to collect weapons, and has seized over 2,000 so far.
