Japan and other donors have contributed $50 million to the DDR (disarmament, demobilization and reintegration) program that takes gunmen working for warlords and finds them civilian employment or inducts them into the national army. This phase of DDR will deal with 10,000 gunmen. 

In the southern city of Kandahar, Taliban attacked a local militia commander, but the bodyguards repelled the attack. The local Taliban have been making more attacks on local Afghan officials, as their attacks on American forces have been largely unsuccessful.
