 The government says the 15 European hostages are still alive, and held in rebel camps near the Libyan border. Apparently ransom negotiations are  under way between the governments of the hostages, with Algeria having agreed to let the rebels out of the country with their loot once the hostages are freed. Algeria does not want anyone hurt, as this is bad for the tourist business. So is kidnapping, which will be encouraged if the rebels get away with this.
