Aid agencies report that about 200 Angolans starve to death each day, with thousands more suffering from malnutrition. The principal cause of the hunger are the hundreds of thousands of civilian refugees fleeing the fighting, or trapped in government held towns under siege by the rebels. The roads are constantly threatened by bandits and rebels, and even air transport is difficult because UNITA troops have shot down air aircraft (not knowing if the cargo is aid or weapons.)
