 The government has promised to protect majors receiving death threats from FARC. But the threatened mayors in the 13 northern provinces are not so sure. So far, over 120 elected mayors have resigned, allowing their places to be taken by officials acceptable to FARC. The rebels are apparently planning to try and take control of the oil producing region, which would provide an enormous source of income. The government will have to respond, but no one yet knows how or how effectively.
