A major problem with defeating the leftist rebel organizations is rebuilding the economies in the large rural areas the rebels control. These areas have built an economy based on smuggling consumer goods and growing drug related crops. The government is trying to come up with an economic plan that will not put millions of liberated Columbians into poverty once the rebel control is removed. This is happening more and more as government troops continue to clear out rebel held areas.
