One threat appears to have receded: that of reprisals from former soldiers for the killing of one of their leaders. Another, meanwhile, appears to be escalating: namely, violence involving supporters of former president Jean-Bertrand Aristide. At least 20 of them were killed last week in a combined MINUSTAH-national police operation, and the government, far from releasing its most prominent pro-Aristide prisoners, has decided to prosecute them.
