American and British warplanes hit air defense targets in central Iraq, in response to Iraq's rebuilding of their air defense system. In the biggest raid in two years, sixteen US and eight British warplanes hit five targets, including one ten kilometers south of Baghdad. The targets were long range radars for spotting allied warplanes and control centers that coordinated anti-aircraft weapons. The Iraqis have been rebuilding their radars and control centers and it's been noted that Iraqi anti-aircraft weapons have become more effective as a result. Iraq is determined to bring down at least one allied warplane, not just for the propaganda value, but also because they know such a loss would shift British and American public opinion against the patrols over the no-fly zones in Iraq.
