US military forces in the Persian Gulf have increased from 25,000 to some 70,000 since the war in Afghanistan began. Most of the additional troops are there to support operations in Afghanistan. But troops in Kuwait have gone from 5,500 to 10,500. The US says the build up is not for an attack on Iraq, but these forces could be used for that. Most of the additional troops are in support, not combat,  units.
