Kurdish War: March 21, 2002

Archives

Turkish news services reported a major riot in Diyarbakir (southeast Turkey). At least two men were crushed to death in the melee and several dozen injured in a clash between riot police and Kurds celebrating Kurdish New Year. Turkish authorities said they were concerned that Kurd radicals would use the holiday event to foment violence. Subsequent reports said most Kurd New Year celebrations elsewhere in Turkey were peaceful, though one report said Turkish police in Istanbul detained over 400 people. This is a smaller death toll than 1992, when around 50" Kurds were killed in a series of violent Kurdish New Year demonstrations in southeastern Turkey.
