The army says that Indian made INSAS rifles malfunctioned during the August 7th battle with the Maoists, leading to high loss of life among soldiers. The INSAS rifle is Indian is an Indian designed, 5.56mm rifle that is based on the basic AK-47 design. The INSAS rifle has been criticized before because of performance and reliability problems.
