A decades old war between Myanmar (Burma) and tribal rebels has spilled over into Thailand last week. Myanmar troops, pursuing Shan tribal rebels, advanced into Thailand along a mountainous portion of the border. Thai troops fired back with machine-guns and artillery, killing 14 Myanmar troops. Thailand also claimed Myanmar troops had fired mortars into a Thai village, killing or wounding several civilians. Myanmar denied this, and the accusations of incursions. Over the weekend, firing continued across the border and a hundred Myanmar soldiers are said to have been killed. In other areas of the border, Myanmar troops fought drug lord fighters and this also led to clashes with Thai border guards. Neither nation wants war, but Thais are increasingly upset with Myanmar rebels, drug lords and Myanmar troops casually crossing the border.
