Kenyan police apparently fought demonstrators in several political rallies in western Kenya. News reports remain unclear as to who started the violence. What is clear is that there is trouble brewing around Lake Victoria, particularly the port town of Kisumu. The rallies have been organized by the Muungano wa Mageuzi (Movement for Change nicknamed the Mageuzi). The Mageuzi complain about (among other things) the endemic corruption of President Daniel arap Mois regime. The autocratic arap Moi has been in power since 1978. One report said Mageuzi founder, lawyer James Orengo, was arrested by the police as he drove up to a rally. Trouble has also occurred in Kisii. Last November arap Moi ordered his police to crack down on the Mageuzi. Arap Moi says the Mageuzi is a subversive organization and outlawed Mageuzi rallies.
