  In the last two weeks, Russian diplomats have been expelled from Canada and Sweden for economic espionage. The KGB veterans who now run Russia's intelligence services had been engaged in economic spying before the Soviet Union fell, for the Soviet Union had to steal the technology it could not create or buy. Today, the Russian spies steal economic information for resale, although Russian firms don't usually pay as much as foreign ones.  There is still some old fashioned military espionage going on, but that won't pay the bills.
