: An update on the big FNL offensive in and around the Burundian capital of Bujumbura: the Burundian Army reported 44 FNL rebels were killed south of Bujumbura. Among the 44 rebels were two senior FNL officers, Colonel Raphael Barankitse and Major Giovanni Kwizera. The 44 were apparently killed in a heavy firegight in the Gikoto area. The FNL offensive began July 7 with a series of attacks south of Bujumbura. The Burundian government reported that, as of July 12, 179 people had been killed in the offensive (20 to 30 were Burundian Army troops.)
