In an effort to calm down Somalis, the US government said that it wasn't looking for an excuse to invade Somalia, but simply wanted to keep an eye on any terrorist operations within in country. In particular, the US was looking for al Qaeda or any other foreign operations trying to set up shop in Somalia.
