 Government forces withdrew from their Elephant Pass base, which guards the entrance to the Jaffna peninsula. They did this as LTTE rebels moved to surround the base. Withdrawal was seen as preferable to a siege. The base complex (the main base and some smaller ones nearby) supported two divisions (some 16,000 troops.) The LTTE captured quantities of ammunition and equipment that the army did not destroy as they withdrew.
