The army sees the war against the Islamic militants winding down and is now looking to rebuilding the army as a conventional force. For most of the past decade, the army has largely been employed as light infantry, for  anti-terrorism duty. Algeria's 300 T-72 tanks, for example, have been starved for money to buy spare parts. To keep some tanks running, others were cannibalized for parts. The Czech Republic is offering a modernized T-72 tank, as well as armored cars and other military equipment. There were discussions of such a deal in 1997, but no purchases were made.
