Russia estimates that there are now 7,000-8,000 rebels in southern Chechenya. Fighting is fierce around the village of Itum-Kale, 70 kilometers south of Grozny.  Some are seeking to set up bases in Georgia or Dagestan, but Russian agents and police (in Dagestan) and agents and diplomats (in independent Georgia) are attempting to thwart these plans.
